Paulin Ndahayo is quickly proving to be one of the newest and most passionate ambassadors of IWitness in Rwanda. Ndahayo teaches political education and literature at Gashora Girls Academy in the Bugesera district in eastern Rwanda. He attended the first Rwandan IWitness teacher training at Kigali Genocide Memorial Center (KGMC) in November 2013 and, with his colleague Penelope Aryatugumya, will conduct a pilot of his first IWitness lesson at his school this year.

USC Libraries presented its first-ever Research Award last month to a student who turned to the Visual History Archive to research transitional justice in South Africa and Rwanda.Nitya Ramanathan, a junior international relations major, took first place for her paper How do We Put Ourselves Back Together? An Analytical Comparison between Transitional Justice in Rwanda and South Africa, written for Professor Wolf Gruner’s Comparative Genocide course.

Sally Ingram was first introduced to USC Shoah Foundation years ago, when her mother-in-law, Marione Ingram, gave her testimony to the Visual History Archive about her life in hiding during the war. Now, Ingram is using testimony and the IWitness Video Challenge to inspire her middle school students to deeply engage with survivors’ stories.

Though they haven’t entered high school yet, Lauren Fenech is making sure her students understand the steps that can lead to genocide.In her eighth grade language arts class at Inverness Middle School in Florida earlier this week, Fenech led her students in USC Shoah Foundation’s Pyramid of Hate activity. The activity integrates first-person testimonies from the Institute's Visual History Archive with the Pyramid of Hate, a curricular tool developed by the Anti-Defamation League for its A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute.

USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research will host the international conference “A Conflict? Genocide and Resistance in Guatemala,” at the University of Southern California, Sept. 11-14, 2016. The scholars profiled in this series were each selected to present their research at the conference. For her presentation at the conference, Morna Macleod will look back on her experiences working in human rights in the final years of the Guatemalan Genocide 30 years ago.

Discover some of the testimonies in USC Shoah Foundation's Armenian Genocide Collection.Levon Giridlian was just 10 years old when he saw 2,500 friends, family members, and neighbors massacred and thrown into a mass ditch.It was 1895, and he was in his hometown of Kayseri, Turkey. Giridlian, however, was not a Turk but rather an Armenian. The killings later became known as the Hamidian massacres, a chilling precursor to the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

Kari Shagena is combining poetry and Holocaust survivor testimony to inspire empathy and action in her students following an IWitness seminar in Michigan last summer. Shagena, a language arts and social studies teacher at Richmond Middle School, was one of over dozen Michigan educators who attended USC Shoah Foundation’s IWitness Summer Institute in Farmington Hills this past August, a three-day seminar that introduced educators to everything they need to know to incorporate testimonies and activities from IWitness into their classrooms.

Inspired by the issues affecting his students in Chicago, high school English teacher Wesley Davidson authored one of USC Shoah Foundation’s new resources for 100 Days to Inspire Respect. Davidson, an English teacher at Chicago Tech Academy, authored an IWitness activity called “To Protect and Serve: Community and Policing,” which is the featured resource today, Day 29 of 100 Days to Inspire Respect.

Peggy Walker’s students at McCall Middle School in Massachusetts have changed the way they do research based on their experience with IWitness. Walker first began using IWitness last year, after using educational resources she found on the USC Shoah Foundation website. She began exploring IWitness and said she “immediately” saw the potential it could have for her students.

USC Shoah Foundation mourns the death of Georg Citrom, Holocaust survivor and longtime friend of the Institute. Citrom was born in Oradea, Romania, in 1931. His father was a teacher in the local Jewish school and he had one older sister, Suzy. His family practiced modern Orthodox Judaism and he loved visiting his grandparents at their house in the countryside.

As seventh-grade students at Rocky Heights Middle School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Amanda Gin and Chloe Voss are still very dependent on their parents. However, they realized that being able to count on adults was a privilege not every child had. “Most of the children at the foster [center] were our age,” Amanda said. “Seeing as how Chloe and I, and many other teens, rely and depend on parents for so many things, it’s hard to imagine life without them. Yet the kids at the foster shelter are able to go through that every day.”

We’re all the same.” Ninth graders in Sara Mehltretter’s world cultures and geography class at Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa, Fla., wrote these six-word stories and many others, and shared them with not only each other but also their whole school.

Iris Mandel teaches English for native speakers at Ulpanat Amana, a private girls’ high school in Kfar Saba, Israel. She taught in Cleveland, Ohio, for 10 years and is now in her 22nd year at Ulpanat Amana.
