WHY ATTEND THIS PROGRAM? Philadelphia is home to the new Horwitz-Wasserman Holocaust Memorial Plaza. The Memorial Plaza features USC Shoah Foundation’s IWalk app that guides visitors through the interpretive elements of the Memorial Plaza with background information and personal testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses. To support educators’ integration of this innovative resource, the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation and USC Shoah Foundation have partnered with ADL to provide professional development to educators in the Philadelphia area.

Five more IWalks are in development in Hungary as part of a new initiative led by teachers who have graduated from USC Shoah Foundation’s Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century professional development program.

Hungarian ethics teachers and Polish educators were introduced this spring to IWalk, USC Shoah Foundation’s educational program that combines testimony with real-life locations, and are interested in incorporating it into their teaching.

Marcel Mahdal, a graduate of the USC Shoah Foundation Master Teacher program in Czech Republic launched a project last week in which students from two schools work together to create their own local IWalk.

After months of beta testing with educators around the globe, USC Shoah Foundation launches the brand new IWalk app, which features a refined layout and design, educator onboarding support, and improved video playback.

Just one month after IWalk launched in Czech Republic, a second resource is already being developed. The city of Brno, in the Southern Moravia region of the country, will join Prague in offering downloadable testimony clip reels of Holocaust survivor testimonies that students may watch as they visit relevant historical sites.

In my role as part of USC Shoah Foundation’s Education Department, I have the honor of working with our team members both in the United States and around the world to create localized educational content using genocide survivor testimony. As a former classroom teacher and a lifelong believer in the importance of experiential learning, I was fortunate to take part in three IWalks in Budapest, Hungary, Prague, Czechia, and Warsaw, Poland while on a recent vacation.

Úryvek ze svědectví Marie Hořákové popisuje situaci v této nemocnici pohledem jedné ze zdravotních sester, ženy, kterou chránilo manželství s takzvaně „árijským“ mužem. Perzekuce těchto mužů, odmítajících rozvod s manželkami, jež byly rasistickými zákony označeny za židovky, je specificky protektorátní kapitolou historie holocaustu. Pouze u nás byli za odmítání rozvodu vězněni, internováni a deportováni do koncentračních táborů.

Pomoc, kterou deportovaným poskytovali příbuzní chránění sňatkem s „árijcem“ je historiky často přehlížena. Vinohradský příběh Věry Saudkové je unikátnější tím, že deportovanými příbuznými byly v jejím případě sestry Franze Kafky, dnes celosvětově slavného spisovatele a pražské intelektuální a turistické ikony. Gabriela (Elli), Valerie (Valli) a Otylie (Ottla) Kafkovy se konce války nedožily.
