As the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, it falls to future generations to ensure their stories remain vibrant and strong.With that in mind, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education brought groups of students and teachers from around the world this week to Poland to not only participate in Tuesday’s 70th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp, but to give them the a deeper understanding of the horrors of World War II.

Pinchas Gutter recalls his arrival at the Theresienstadt Ghetto in Czechoslovakia two weeks prior to his liberation by the Soviet armed forces in 1945. He relates he refused to participate in the mistreatment of the German ghetto guards by Soviet soldiers during the liberation of the ghetto. He remembers the sadness he felt over the mistreatment of anyone even of perpetrators.

When the U.S. enters World War II on December 8, 1941, the United States becomes an ally of China.

This collection of photos offers a rare glimpse of an outdoor Jewish ghetto in the countryside – specifically in Kutno, Poland. The images depict a form of ghetto that was actually more common, but far less known, than the urban settings (i.e. Warsaw Ghetto) that are cemented in the public imagination.
