One hundred educators recently attended Lessons of the Holocaust and Contemporary Russia, a three-day seminar in Kaliningrad organized by the Russian Research and Holocaust Education Center.  Svetlana Gorbacheva, an educator who has visited the Institute and created an educational lesson which incorporates testimony, modeled the lesson during the seminar.Album posted on:  December 19, 2008

On February 18, 1943, as a result of German pressure, Japanese authorities established a ghetto in the Hongkew neighborhood of Shanghai for stateless Jewish refugees who had arrived in Shanghai from Germany and German-occupied areas of Europe from 1937-1942. Kanoh Ghoya was a Japanese official responsible for giving monthly passes to Jewish refugees living in the Hongkew ghetto in Shanghai, China during World War II. Ghoya was also known as the "King of the Jews" and was infamous for his inhumane treatment of ghetto inhabitants.

In 1941 more anti- Jewish measures were implemented and intensified in Nazi Germany including ration cards, forbidding Jews to emigrate and deportations of Jews to ghettos and concentration camps. Gerda Haas was a nurse at a hospital in Berlin  when her mother was deported to the Riga ghetto in Latvia in late 1941.

Barry Bruk speaks of the deteriorating living conditions in the Lódz ghetto, Poland, in late 1941. He remembers the deportation of thousands of Jews from the Lódz ghetto to the Kulmhof Death Camp in Chelmno, Poland, in January 1941 and relates that his sister, brother-in-law and young nephew were among those deported and killed in the camp.

Kurt Thomas was deported from his hometown of Boskovice, first to Brno, then to Terezin ghetto, then to Trawniki and the ghetto of Piaski. Kurt describes his deportation experience including the deportation center, a school, which served as the main assembly point for transports from Brno. His testimony is featured in the new Brno iWalk in Czech Reublic.

Holocaust survivor Minna Aspler -- who spent time in the Warsaw Ghetto -- recalls the personality of Emanuel Ringelblum, who had been her history teacher. Ringelblum went on to lead a clandestine effort with other Warsaw Ghetto inhabitants to amass an archive that would eventually shine a light on the atrocities that occurred there. Aspler's testimony, recorded by McGill University in Montreal in 1995, is stored in USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive.

In my role as part of USC Shoah Foundation’s Education Department, I have the honor of working with our team members both in the United States and around the world to create localized educational content using genocide survivor testimony. As a former classroom teacher and a lifelong believer in the importance of experiential learning, I was fortunate to take part in three IWalks in Budapest, Hungary, Prague, Czechia, and Warsaw, Poland while on a recent vacation.
