The first phase of the program in which educator teams developed multimedia lessons from the Hungarian-language testimonies of the Institute’s Visual History Archive ended on April 17, 2010 with an official ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest. The program was based on a three-way partnership between the USC Shoah Foundation Institute, the Holocaust Memorial Center and the Educational Research and Development Institute (OFI) of the Hungarian Ministry of Education.

Nearly every day since she first received her teacher’s resource guide from Echoes and Reflections this spring, Becky Henderson-Howie has used it to teach her students in northern New York about the Holocaust. The middle- and high school English, Holocaust and Public Speaking teacher met Echoes and Reflections educator Jennifer Goss at the Belfer National Conference for Educators at USHMM in November 2015, and Goss encouraged her to sign up for Echoes and Reflections’ free online professional development courses.

The Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century program in Ukraine wasn’t Olena Bilchenko’s first experience teaching with the Visual History Archive. But the program gave her the opportunity to develop her own lessons for the first time, and she emerged with new skills and feeling a personal connection to Holocaust survivors and witnesses.

Lyndsay Fleming teaches sixth grade social studies at East Cobb Middle School in Marietta, Georgia.I first learned about IWitness from Jane Moore during a professional learning day. I was interested in using the website in my classroom because of the primary and secondary sources and interviews of Holocaust survivors. One of the major benefits of the website is the premade lesson and activities as well as being able to create your own.

The inaugural workshop of the Institute's Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century program ran from July 1-6 at Central European University in Budapest.  The program for teachers in Europe provides professional development training centered on the educational use of Holocaust eyewitness testimony.  Twenty teachers from across Hungary (and three from Hungarian-speaking regions beyond the national border) completed the workshop, which prepared them to produce their own testimony-based classroom lessons and activities.

The Institute recently conducted its inaugural Leichtag Family Foundation Master Teacher workshop, Teaching with Testimony, for middle and high school teachers in Southern California.  The goal of the workshop was to provide participants with training on how to develop testimony-based classroom lessons and integrate testimony from the Institute’s archive into existing curricula.  Participants are members of the Institute's Teacher Innovation Network.  To learn more about the workshop and Teacher Innovation Network, click here.

Segments for the Classroom is a video resource created in response to the interest expressed by educators of students ages 14 and up to integrate testimony with their classroom lessons. Segments for the Classroom consists of seven downloadable clip reels—six in English, and one in Spanish—that contain excerpts of testimony from the Institute’s Visual History Archive covering a variety of topics including the dangers of stereotypes and discrimination.

Upon the invitation of Stephen D. Smith, Executive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute, Balazs Bokor, Consul General of the Republic of Hungary in Los Angeles, paid a visit to the Institute on June 15. Dr. Smith introduced the Consul General to the Institute’s work, and in particular, discussed the international educational work the Institute conducts with partners across Europe and within Hungary.
