As the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, it falls to future generations to ensure their stories remain vibrant and strong.With that in mind, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education brought groups of students and teachers from around the world this week to Poland to not only participate in Tuesday’s 70th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp, but to give them the a deeper understanding of the horrors of World War II.

From mid-October through mid-December, four staff members from the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center (KGMC) will intern at the USC Shoah Foundation Institute.Yves Kamuronsi, head of the Documentation Center of the KGMC, and three colleagues—Diogene Mwizerwa, Martin Niwenshuti, and Paul Rukesha—will study the Institute's indexing methodology and lend their expertise to the development of indexing terminology appropriate for the Rwandan Tutsi genocide experience.  They will also spend time learning about the technology being used to preserve the testimonies digitally.

In order to mark the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Numerus Clausus law in Hungary, the Holocaust Memorial Center in Budapest has organized an exhibition to commemorate of the event.  The exhibition aims to show the rise in anti-Semitism in the 1920s, and the evolution of Hungarian society from social and political inclusion to one of exclusion.  The exhibition features testimony clips of four survivors from the Institute’s Visual History Archive, as well as posters, prints, news articles, photos, newsreels, radio speeches, and other artifacts.  The exhibit runs from Oct

The Institute has made 2,500 of its testimonies available at the Museum of Jewish Heritage–A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, in New York, NY.  The collection, which will open to the public on the 73rd anniversary of Kristallnacht (November 9, 2011), includes testimony of Holocaust survivors, rescuers, and liberators.  Press releaseAlbum posted on:  November 7, 2011

The Institute is working with the Holocaust Documentation Center (DHS) in Slovakia to assist the development of additional lessons based on testimony from the archive.  At a DSH-organized seminar in Bratislava, Martin Šmok presented clips of testimony from local survivors, and two lesson authors–Eva Kizáková and Alica Virdzeková–demonstrated their lessons to the participants.Album posted on:  December 19, 2008

In July 2010, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute conducted a follow-up workshop with graduates of the 2009 Master Teacher Workshop.  During the two-day workshop, each teacher presented his or her testimony-based lesson, which was developed as a result of the workshop, and discussed opportunities for continued involvement in the program.  Funding for the Teacher Innovation Network is provided by the Leichtag Family Foundation.Album posted on:  September 3, 2010

In 2007, the Institute partnered with the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education, and Sports, and the Education and Teacher Training Agency, to create materials for Croatian classrooms based on testimonies from Croatia.  Through this program, a group of teachers in Croatia created six classroom lessons based on testimonies designed to help students learn about the history of the Holocaust and the impact of history on their own lives.  The program continues with teacher training sessions designed to encourage the use of these materials throughout Croatia.

The inaugural workshop of the Institute's Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century program ran from July 1-6 at Central European University in Budapest.  The program for teachers in Europe provides professional development training centered on the educational use of Holocaust eyewitness testimony.  Twenty teachers from across Hungary (and three from Hungarian-speaking regions beyond the national border) completed the workshop, which prepared them to produce their own testimony-based classroom lessons and activities.

The Institute recently conducted its inaugural Leichtag Family Foundation Master Teacher workshop, Teaching with Testimony, for middle and high school teachers in Southern California.  The goal of the workshop was to provide participants with training on how to develop testimony-based classroom lessons and integrate testimony from the Institute’s archive into existing curricula.  Participants are members of the Institute's Teacher Innovation Network.  To learn more about the workshop and Teacher Innovation Network, click here.

The USC Shoah Foundation Institute (SFI) planned a workshop at the Center for Digital Systems (CeDiS) at Freie Universität Berlin, to organize a two and one-half-day workshop dedicated to integrating video testimonies into secondary school classroom instruction.  Looking at History:  Incorporating Video Testimony Across the Curriculum was held on the campus of the Freie Universität, where the Shoah Foundation Institute’s entire Visual History Archive has been available and searchable since 2006.  The goal of the workshop was to bring the Institute’s international partners from Europe

More than 350 New York metropolitan area high school students debuted the work that they completed in the IWitness application at the United Nations Headquarters, on January 23, 2012.The event was cosponsored by the United States Mission to the United Nations, and held in observance of the International Day of Commemoration, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.  The theme of the week of events for 2012 at the United Nations is “Children and the Holocaust.”Read a news item about the event.

Educators from the state of Tennessee, some traveling up to three hours, gathered at the Sara Simpson Professional Development Technology Center in Knoxville to participate in an Echoes and Reflections program on Wednesday, February 13.  Organized by the Tennessee Holocaust Commission Inc., more than 20 secondary school educators received training as well as a copy of the award-winning Echoes and Reflections resource guide.
