This unit is designed for those students who have completed a teacher guided reading of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The unit theme is about ordinary people who show courage, bravery, and kindness and take risks under extraordinary circumstances of danger. The theme is about not being a bystander in the face of wrongdoing. Video testimony from USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive feature a Holocaust survivor whose experiences mirror those reflected in the novel.

Rescue is a crucial topic in understanding genocide survival and appreciating the difficult choices that people make in extreme circumstances. Although many stories of survival during the Holocaust are due to unexplained and unexplainable circumstances, there are also numerous accounts of individual and group acts of aid and rescue that contributed to the survival of thousands of Jewish people.

This video focuses on the theme of religion and rescue, and recounts examples of how religious leaders acted both individually and as part of a network to protest anti-Jewish measures and provide refuge to Jews in convents, monasteries, and private homes. The video shares the experiences of Edward Harvitt and Kurt Lewin, Jewish survivors who were recipients of aid during the Holocaust; and Isaac Sephiha, who worked with Catholic clergy to help Jews.

During the Holocaust, numerous individuals and groups risked their lives to save countless Jews.  Originally displayed for International Holocaust Remembrance Day at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, this exhibit showcases five themes of rescue brought to light in the testimonies of nine Jewish survivors and four rescuers and aid providers.

This morning, I stood at attention as our select chorus sang the Star Spangled Banner. Looking at the flag in the middle school auditorium, I paused a moment to feel gratitude for growing up in a country where I have the right to define and redefine myself. I grew up believing I could become whoever I wanted to be. The flag stood tall, as did I. Thank goodness, I thought, that I live in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

The school I teach at in Alberta, Canada, is considered a "unique setting" within our public school system. This means that our programming is designed to meet the complex learning, social and emotional needs of elementary children who exhibit extreme behavioral and emotional difficulties which impede their ability to be successful in school, community and home.

For six months this spring and summer, I had the pleasure of leading a team of staff and volunteers facilitating the beta run of New Dimensions in Testimony (NDT) from USC Shoah Foundation at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. I watched people of all ages approach the giant monitor displaying an image of Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter, first with trepidation, then curiosity, then, at last, affection. Here are a few things that I learned about technology and humanity from the project.

While the average USC student was dragging themselves out of bed to make it to their first class after Spring Break, I was--rather jet-lagged--sitting in an 800 year old room cloaked in paintings of old intellectuals and world renowned writers in a tiny corridor of Hertford College at Oxford University, wondering how on Earth I could be so lucky to miss a week of school to hang out at one of the oldest, most prestigious centers of learning in the history of Western Civilization.

Diplomats in countries throughout Europe helped Jews escape persecution by issuing visas and other travel paperwork that allowed Jews to flee Nazi-occupied territory. Featured in the video are the testimonies of Israel Kipen, Per Anger, and Henri Deutsch who recount their personal experiences of rescue during the Holocaust.

Liam Neeson will be attending USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education’s special 20th anniversary benefit screening of Schindler’s List that will be held in Philadelphia on Thursday, September 12.  Neeson played the starring role of German industrialist Oskar Schindler in the film, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

The world’s largest collection of visual Holocaust survivor and witness testimonies is now available to United States Holocaust Memorial Museum visitors. The University of Southern California (USC) Shoah Foundation Institute’s Visual History Archive contains nearly 52,000 video testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses from 56 nations and in 32 languages.
