The Jewish Museum in Prague has teamed with USC Shoah Foundation to provide a new testimony-based lesson plan for teachers in the Czech Republic. The lesson, “International Committee of the Red Cross and Terezín,” is about the Terezín ghetto and its use as a source of Nazi propaganda in a 1944 International Red Cross report.

Professor Schwartzman offers an elective to undergraduate seniors mostly majoring in communication studies as well as students majoring in other disciplines. The course is specifically structured around several different voices. It begins with Nazi-era propaganda approached from several different media: written, audio, and visual. Much of the course is the survivor testimony component, together with films about the Holocaust.

Teachers from all over Hungary gathered in Budapest this month for the six-day introductory seminar to the USC Shoah Foundation’s 2013 Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century program. But there was one educator among them who didn’t just travel across the country – he came from the other side of the world.

Professor Lücke teaches a course for students interested in becoming secondary history teachers in Germany. An important component in this course is an eight-week internship in which the teachers in training have to implement a complete project for integrating testimonies in their history classes. In the course of their internships, the teachers in training invite 60 high school students ages 16 to 18 to visit the Freie Universität Berlin on three separate occasions to watch testimonies from the VHA and interact with the teachers in training about the content.

USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education invites proposals for its 2013 Teaching Fellows program. Teaching faculty from all 43 VHA access sites are encouraged to apply. The fellowship provides summer support for instructors interested in creating a new course or modifying an existing course to incorporate testimony from the Visual History Archive. There are no restrictions with respect to the disciplinary approach or methodology of the proposed courses.

Master Teacher Lesly Culp developed the lesson Coming to America after the War as part of a course on the theme The American Dream through Race, Class, and Gender. The lesson features testimony of Holocaust survivors as they describe their experiences of coming to America.

USC Shoah Foundation gave a presentation today about the use of survivor testimony and its educational website IWitness at California State University, Long Beach. The presentation was part of CSU Long Beach’s weeklong Eva and Eugene Schlesinger Teacher Training Endowed Workshop on the Holocaust. The workshop provides Holocaust curriculum development training for high school teachers.

Jakub Mlynar works with USC Shoah Foundation across the world from the majority of its staff, but his enthusiasm can be felt all the way from the Czech Republic. Mlynar is the coordinator of the Malach Center for Visual History, a Visual History Archive access site located at Charles University in Prague. He is also its 2013 teaching fellow, preparing to teach a sociology course using the Visual History Archive next winter.

Dan Leshem is Associate Director for Research Director of the USC Shoah Foundation–The Institute for Visual History and Education. Dr. Leshem holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature & Jewish Studies from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. His dissertation, The Language of Suffering: Writing and Reading the Holocaust argued for the necessity of ethical approaches to interpreting Holocaust testimony.

Developed by Rob Hadley and Kelly Watson, graduates of the USC Shoah Foundation’s 2010 Master Teacher Workshop, this three-lesson customizable set is designed to teach students about genocide by focusing on survivor and rescuer testimony of the Rwandan Genocide of the Tutsis in 1994. The first lesson, The History of Modern Rwanda through Photos, is a brief historical overview to provide an initial, basic understanding of the modern history of Rwanda that led up to the 1994 genocide.

The USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education is now accepting applications for a summer course that will allow USC students to study post-genocide conflict resolution in Rwanda. "Rebuilding Rwanda:  Memory, Testimony, and Living Together after Genocide" (IR-318, Conflict Resolution and Peace Research) will provide a practicum for students to consider the complex task that societies face in the aftermath of genocide.

The Swedish Embassy today announced funding for an ambitious new Rwanda-wide peace-building program.  The Rwanda Peace Education Programme is designed to counter behavioral risk factors for genocide by promoting social cohesion, pluralism, personal responsibility, empathy, critical thinking and action to build a more peaceful society.

Professor Seipp teaches a senior-level research seminar on the Holocaust for history majors. For faculty members whose primary interests fall outside of the United States, he says, “Identifying primary sources in English for seminar students can be an insurmountable challenge. Since 24,823 of the testimonies are in English, the VHA offers a potential solution for those teaching classes in a range of areas.”

Stephen Feinberg remembers always finding the study of history to be interesting and exciting. During his studies as an undergraduate and graduate student, he was introduced to the history of the Holocaust. “I became increasingly aware that this was a watershed event in history,” he recalls. “Therefore, I felt that it should be taught in schools.”

Liam Neeson will be attending USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education’s special 20th anniversary benefit screening of Schindler’s List that will be held in Philadelphia on Thursday, September 12.  Neeson played the starring role of German industrialist Oskar Schindler in the film, for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

Seventy-seven years ago today, the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games commenced in Germany. Memories of the XI Olympiad loom large in many Holocaust survivors’ minds: 171 testimonies in USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education’s Visual History Archive (VHA) mention the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games.
