Developed by Rob Hadley and Kelly Watson, graduates of the USC Shoah Foundation’s 2010 Master Teacher Workshop, this three-lesson customizable set is designed to teach students about genocide by focusing on survivor and rescuer testimony of the Rwandan Genocide of the Tutsis in 1994. The first lesson, The History of Modern Rwanda through Photos, is a brief historical overview to provide an initial, basic understanding of the modern history of Rwanda that led up to the 1994 genocide.

This lesson is developed as part of the teaching process in the 8th grade of elementary school. It is dedicated to Branko Lustig and his Oscar-winning film, Schindler’s List (1993). The lesson’s objectives include development of reading skills: prediction, skimming, scanning, inferring; listening skills: prediction, gist, listening for specific information, inference; speaking skills: fluency, accuracy, practice; and discourse skills: the ability to initiate discussion about choices and consequences of actions.
