Developed by Rob Hadley and Kelly Watson, graduates of the USC Shoah Foundation’s 2010 Master Teacher Workshop, this three-lesson customizable set is designed to teach students about genocide by focusing on survivor and rescuer testimony of the Rwandan Genocide of the Tutsis in 1994. The first lesson, The History of Modern Rwanda through Photos, is a brief historical overview to provide an initial, basic understanding of the modern history of Rwanda that led up to the 1994 genocide.

Through the use of excerpts of testimony from the USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive, this lesson will be used to accomplish three specific goals: To inform and educate students about the Sonderkommando.  To inform students about the October 7, 1944 revolt at Auschwitz.  To aid students in examining the significance of men and women contributing to the revolt, as well as, the impact of the revolt on Auschwitz.

This unit is designed for those students who have completed a teacher guided reading of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The unit theme is about ordinary people who show courage, bravery, and kindness and take risks under extraordinary circumstances of danger. The theme is about not being a bystander in the face of wrongdoing. Video testimony from USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive feature a Holocaust survivor whose experiences mirror those reflected in the novel.

Institut USC Shoah Foundation připravil pro české učitele a studenty hodinu Když rasismus je zákon, která studentům pomůže prozkoumat fenomén etnické, náboženské a kulturní asimilace, a na konkrétním případě tzv. Norimberských zákonů demonstruje, jak se může extremistický předsudek stát součástí právního řádu totalitního státu a postihnout široké vrstvy obyvatelstva. Základem hodiny jsou úryvky z interview s pamětníky z archívu Institutu.

Studying the nine principles of economics through the lens of first-person video testimony will illustrate how choice and the economic decision-making process can be distorted by circumstance. In addition, by juxtaposing an exploration of the principles designed to underscore a free market and a free people with the extreme opposite circumstances the aim is to build an appreciation for government, government policy, and measured choices.

Daily Choices, Lasting Effects supports the theme of personal responsibility, specifically the choices we make on a daily basis that can have lasting effects, whether or not we initially realize their implications. Four clips of Holocaust survivor testimony from USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive reflect on another person’s action that had a tremendous effect, either positively or negatively on his/her life. Students will be guided with questions: What are our roles in society with regards to personal responsibility?

This classroom exercise is designed to help educators teach students ages 14-18 about the effects and consequences of hatred and intolerance. The exercise integrates first-person testimonies from the Institute's archive with the Pyramid of Hate, a curricular tool developed by the Anti-Defamation League for its A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE® Institute.

Segments for the Classroom is a video resource created in response to the interest expressed by educators of students ages 14 and up to integrate testimony with their classroom lessons. Segments for the Classroom consists of seven downloadable clip reels—six in English, and one in Spanish—that contain excerpts of testimony from the Institute’s Visual History Archive covering a variety of topics including the dangers of stereotypes and discrimination.
