The USC Shoah Foundation Institute organized a symposium for educators and leaders of partner organizations in Rwanda and South Africa on July 25 and 26.  The symposium, titled Teaching, Testimony, and Transformation:  Global Landscapes, centered on the educational use of Holocaust and genocide survivor testimony in the classroom setting.  Participants worked towards a shared understanding of opportunities and challenges that educators face in different countries and the factors that contribute to convergences and divergences in education across national borders.  They also explore

The inaugural workshop of the Institute's Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century program ran from July 1-6 at Central European University in Budapest.  The program for teachers in Europe provides professional development training centered on the educational use of Holocaust eyewitness testimony.  Twenty teachers from across Hungary (and three from Hungarian-speaking regions beyond the national border) completed the workshop, which prepared them to produce their own testimony-based classroom lessons and activities.

In July, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute held a follow-up workshop for graduates of the 2011 Master Teacher Program. Participants reconvened as a professional practice- and learning-community after using testimony in the classroom during the past school year.

The National Education Association (NEA) has added a selection of the Institute's classroom lessons to its Lesson Plan Search Engine. The lessons, which are available online, center on experiences of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses. Now searchable on the NEA Lesson Plan Search Engine
