Erdélyi Lajos 1929-ben született Marosvásárhelyen. 1936 és 1940 között a zsidó elemiben, majd a gimnáziumban, illetve a kolozsvári Zsidó Líceumban tanul 1944-ig, a német megszállásig. Ezután családjával együtt a marosvásárhelyi gettóba kényszerül, ahonnan Auschwitzba deportálják őket. Édesanyja és húga azonnal a gázkamrákba kerülnek, ő édesapjával néhány nap auschwitzi tartózkodás után munkatranszporttal Schotterwerkébe majd Dörnhauba jut, ahonnan együtt térnek haza közel egyéves lágerélet után 1945 májusában.
