Designed for educators, Living Histories:  Seven Voices from the Holocaust, is a series of 7 downloadable 30-minute testimonies, with classroom lessons highlighting a range of eyewitness experiences related to the Holocaust, from the Institute’s Visual History Archive.  Living Histories was piloted in several classrooms across the United States.  One pilot took place in the Spring of 2009 in Merri Weir's history class at Carson High School in Carson, California.  The photos below were taken during a classroom session that focused on one of the seven modules, Howard Cwick, L

On April 7, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute honored students from across the University who made short films using footage from the Institute’s archive of nearly 52,000 videotaped testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses.  The awards ceremony, screening, and panel discussion, made possible by Visions and Voices and HBO, were the culmination of the Student Voices short film competition, which invited all USC students to use the Institute’s archive in order to shape the conversation about violence and genocide.  Among the competition jury and on the panel was Academy Award-wi

On May 12-14, 2010, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute convened a two and one-half-day workshop to explore the intersection between new media and Holocaust education, with the goal of identifying the opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges for education in an online environment.  This meeting was held at the Central European University in Budapest, where the Shoah Foundation Institute’s entire Visual History Archive has been available and searchable since April 2009.  The primary objectives of the workshop were:

On January 25, at the United Nations in New York, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute hosted a reception for the opening of Generations:  Survival and the Legacy of Hope, a video installation which explores the impact of the Holocaust on four families across three generations.  Generations was developed by the UK Holocaust Centre.

On Sunday, February 22, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute presented a screening of its most recent documentary, Spell Your Name, followed by a discussion addressing issues of cultural stereotypes and the complexity of the public memorialization of massacres that took place during the Holocaust in Ukraine.
