Dr. Claudia Ramirez Wiedeman is Director of Education at the USC Shoah Foundation. Dr. Wiedeman earned her PhD from UCLA in Education and with an emphasis in applied linguistics and her specialties include K-12 teacher education, biliteracy, instructional design, digital literacy and evaluation. Dr. Wiedeman oversees the Institute’s flagship educational website, IWitness, which makes audiovisual testimonies of survivors and witnesses of genocide and mass atrocity accessible to educators and students worldwide. Rebecca Baugh tells the heart-wrenching story of Noemi  Ban in her entry to the Student Voices Short Film Contest.In her film, Baugh, a junior international relations global business major, includes historical footage and film clips to supplement Ban’s retelling of how she, as a teenager, took care of her younger siblings in the ghetto and finally watched her family disappear into the gas chamber.“I loved that [the USC Shoah Foundation] takes these huge historical events that we study and made them personal,” Baugh said.

On May 7, 2014, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education will gather in Los Angeles for its 20th Anniversary Ambassadors for Humanity Gala.  To help mark this occasion, the Institute will have the great privilege of welcoming President Barack Obama, who will speak to common values and shared responsibilities in building a brighter future.

This lesson is developed as part of the teaching process in the 8th grade of elementary school. It is dedicated to Branko Lustig and his Oscar-winning film, Schindler’s List (1993). The lesson’s objectives include development of reading skills: prediction, skimming, scanning, inferring; listening skills: prediction, gist, listening for specific information, inference; speaking skills: fluency, accuracy, practice; and discourse skills: the ability to initiate discussion about choices and consequences of actions.

Over 15 years after he worked as assistant international production coordinator at the Shoah Foundation, Joshua Belkind still regards the experience as one that influenced where he is today.Belkind began interning as an assistant videographer at the Shoah Foundation when he was an undergraduate film major at the University of Southern California around 1995. Over the summer, he said, he recorded 10 interviews a week. He ended up doing over 100 interviews.

While re-watching Schindler’s List before applying to present at USC Shoah Foundation’s upcoming international conference “Memory, Media and Technology: Exploring the Trajectories of Schindler’s List,” Peg LeVine was struck by the numerous examples of “ritual annihilation” perpetrated against the Jews in the film, such as the ransacking of synagogues and homes and the destroying of religious objects.
