As the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, it falls to future generations to ensure their stories remain vibrant and strong.With that in mind, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education brought groups of students and teachers from around the world this week to Poland to not only participate in Tuesday’s 70th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp, but to give them the a deeper understanding of the horrors of World War II.

Steven Spielberg, founder of USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education, will present William Clay Ford, Jr., executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, with the Institute’s Ambassador for Humanity Award at the organization’s annual gala, taking place this year in Detroit on September 10, 2015. Ford will be recognized for his leadership and corporate citizenry around education and community. Mickey Shapiro, real estate developer and longstanding member of the Institute’s Board of Councilors, is the event’s co-chairman.

As part of USC Shoah Foundation’s Preserving the Legacy initiative, 281 testimonies from Holocaust Museum Houston are currently being indexed for integration into the Visual History Archive.

USC Shoah Foundation began digitizing Holocaust testimony collections from Holocaust museums across North America last year as part of its Preserving the Legacy initiative. Ever since then, special staff members like Kadie Seitz have been hard at work indexing those thousands of testimonies in preparation for their integration into the Visual History Archive.

The stories are truly harrowing.One man watched as his house was burned down – with his baby brother inside. Another man’s grandfather literally died protecting him from attacking soldiers, and women tried to make themselves “ugly” so they wouldn’t be raped.These are survivors of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre that USC Shoah Foundation interviewed for its Nanjing Massacre collection in the Visual History Archive. Since 2014, a total of 30 interviews have been collected and integrated into the Visual History Archive.

Nanjing testimonies included in Facing History and Ourselves https://www.facinghistory.org 2015: 20 new Nanjing Massacre survivor testimonies are recorded in December 2014: The first 12 testimonies of survivors of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre are indexed and integrated into the Visual History Archive. The next 18 testimonies are recorded in September and October.

Nearly six months after traveling to Poland with USC Shoah Foundation, Soljane Quiles is getting back on a plane and heading to Los Angeles for another program: the first-ever IWitness Teacher Fellowship.At The Highlander Charter School in Rhode Island, Quiles currently teaches 9th and 10th grade history and has been a featured community panelist and award recipient for her dedication to civics education.
