A USC Shoah Foundation film crew is recording four new testimonies in Central Europe this week at Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka, Mauthausen, the Warsaw Ghetto and other historic sites. The project to capture the 360-degree testimonies stems from a partnership with the International March of the Living program.

Rwandan, South African educators join discourse on global perspectives in education The USC Shoah Foundation Institute has organized a symposium for educators and leaders of partner organizations in Rwanda and South Africa. The symposium, titled “Teaching, Testimony, and Transformation: Global Landscapes,” began on July 25 and will conclude on July 26.

Eva explains that she had to pass the ghetto checkpoint on a daily basis, as the school she attended was located outside of her living district. The USC Shoah Foundation Institute, which maintains an archive of nearly 52,000 video testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses, held a workshop in July that was the next step in its Master Teacher Program. The program empowers secondary school educators in the U.S. to use the Institute’s testimonies as a resource for Holocaust and tolerance education, and the development of literacies for the 21st century.

In Soviet-occupied Dubienka, Poland, located by the Bug River and on the border with Ukraine, Sam Szor remembers the military fortification by German armed forces in anticipation of the upcoming invasion of the Soviet Union. He describes the invasion, which took place in the dawn of the morning hours of June 22, 1941. It was his birthday. He recalls the retreat of the Soviet armed forces and the resulting fear felt by the Jewish population with the German occupation of Dubienka.

Herman Gottesman describes the forced labor, living conditions and lack of food in Auschwitz-III. Auschwitz III-Monowitz, also called Buna, was located near the Polish town of Monowice and was the last of three Auschwitz camps established in the vicinity of Oswiecim. This is the 21st testimony clip in the series 70 Days of Testimony: Leading up to the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz.
