On May 7, 2014, USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education will gather in Los Angeles for its 20th Anniversary Ambassadors for Humanity Gala.  To help mark this occasion, the Institute will have the great privilege of welcoming President Barack Obama, who will speak to common values and shared responsibilities in building a brighter future.

Survivor of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and youth activist Yannick Tona will speak on his experiences during the genocide and relate them to concerns of the modern day, including the need for continued genocide education and for social responsibility in the media.   ASC 207 (Annenberg Geoffrey Cowan Forum), 6:30 – 7:30pm, with a reception to follow.

A commemorative vigil to the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, titled and structured around the three central themes of the Kwibuka20 movement. Testimony transcripts will be read aloud, photos of victims will be shared, an original student piano piece will be performed, attendees will record and send messages to Rwanda as part of Kwibuka20’s “A Million Voices” program, and a traditional Rwandan dance will conclude.   University Religious Center Courtyard, 7:30 – 8:30pm.

Holocaust survivor Celina Biniaz, Cambodian Genocide survivor Sara Pol-Lim, and Rwandan Genocide survivor Edith Umugiraneza will speak together on a panel about women in genocide, to be moderated by USC Shoah Foundation Executive Director Stephen Smith. USC Shoah Foundation's 2014 Yom Hashoah Scholar-in-Residence is Professor Mohammed Dajani. He will give a lecture to USC students, faculty and staff Friday, May 9. Join USC Shoah Foundation, SFISA, and the United University Church as it presents the award winning documentary As Seen Through These Eyes.Narrated by Maya Angelou, this film reveals the story of a brave group of people who fought Hitler with the only weapons they had: charcoal, pencil stubs, shreds of paper and memories etched in their minds. It is the culmination of over a decade of work and over 250 interviews.As Seen Through These Eyes is a co-proudction with the Sundance Channel.

Please join USC Shoah Foundation as it co-hosts a lecture with the USC Gould School of Law International Human Rights Clinic.Professor David Crane, former Chief Prosecuter at the Special Court for Sierra Leone, will discuss the effort he has led to seek justice for the hundredsof thousands killed and millions displaced since 2011 in Syria’s ongoing civil war. Crane will detail his tireless advocacy before the UN Security Council, General Assembly, and the US Congress in hopes of establishing a Syrian Extraordinary Tribunal to Prosecute Atrocity Crimes.
