Where are they from?

  • The origin of Roma and Sinti people:  India? Pakistan? The Punjab? The epic poem Shahnameh (‘Book of Kings’) by Persian poet Ferdowsi (10th century), tells of an episode that took place in the year 420.
  • 110-1300: Byzantine Empire. Dialects of the Romani cˇhib language, signs of migration (traces of Farsi, Armenian, and Greek).
  • 15th century: Throughout Europe.
  • 19th century: New wave of migration from the Balkans to the West.

The Roma, the Sinti and other Gypsy groups are part and parcel of pre-modern and modern Europe. They are scattered all over Europe and are present in non-European continents too.
