The question “How do you teach this stuff?” is what brought me to USC Shoah Foundation in 2010 to begin my training and work as a Master Teacher. I was beginning to understand that survivor testimony is the formative center of Holocaust education, that once a student begins to see Holocaust education content through the lens of testimony, the education and the student begin to change in ways that are profound.

Corey Harbaugh is Director of Teaching & Learning at Fennville Public Schools, a community in rural Southwest Lower Michigan. Corey is active in Holocaust education for students and teachers in Michigan and nationally, and his recent chapter on Holocaust education is titled Informed Pedagogy of the Holocaust: A Survey of Teachers Trained by Leading Holocaust Organizations in the United States. The chapter explores many different pedagogical strategies for teaching the Holocaust, but argues survivor testimony through programs like IWitness has to remain at the center of the work.
