George and Giselle Weiss are both child survivors and natives of Belgium. George describes when he first met Giselle after he returned to Belgium from his military service in the Israel. Giselle explains how her grandmother disapproved of their romance because George was not orthodox.  Two years later George and Giselle married in Belgium and then moved to the United States.

Filmmaker Sam Kadi says he’ll be looking for honest, impactful storytelling when he helps judge the entries for this year’s Student Voices Short Film Contest. Kadi – an “engineer by trade, filmmaker by choice,” he says – came to the United States from Syria in his ‘20s and began making short films and documentaries after a stint as a theatrical actor, writer, and director. He graduated from the Motion Picture Institute of Michigan in 2007 and wrote and directed several narrative and documentary films including the award-winning short film Raised Alone in 2009.

During six days of intensive training at the Museum of the History of Polish Jews (MHPJ) in Warsaw, Poland, 10 experienced Polish educators learned how to use USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive in their educational practice.

Eva Dolin was born in Salonika Greece, which had the largest Jewish population in Greece. She remembers being deported to a ghetto area outside of Salonika. Eva also recalls being separated from her parents and how her father encouraged her to escape.

The finalists have been chosen and now it’s up to the viewers to select their favorite entry from the Student Voices Short Film Contest.

Three professors from across the University of Southern California took part in a thought-provoking conversation about technology’s place in teaching the humanities Tuesday, moderated by USC Shoah Foundation director of education Kori Street.

Jack Robbins was a prosecutor for the United States during the Nuremberg Trials. Jack recalls how the trials were fair proceedings that led to justice and even helped advance international law.

Twelve years after being part of the team that designed the interface of the Visual History Archive, Ella Belzberg has made a detailed examination of the process her dissertation at the UC Santa Barbara Gevirtz Graduate School of Education.

In time for February’s Olympic Games and Black History Month, two new activities have been published to IWitness, each dealing with racism in different contexts.

Buchenwald camp liberator Leon Bass reflects on the discrimination he experienced while going to college in the United States after his military service.  Leon describes how baffled and angry he felt that he was encountering the same type of prejudice and threat of civil liberties that he fought against during WWII. This testimony clip is featured in the new IWitness Activity, Fighting in the Face of Racism. 

Iako Behar and his family emigrated from Bulgaria to Mexico after the war. Iako discusses in Spanish the cultural differences between the two countries but also reflects on how welcoming the Mexican community was to his family.

Their focus is on Mexican-American youth activism of the 1930s and ‘40s, but the students in USC’s Echoes of the Mexican Voice journalism course will draw on aspects of USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive when they create their own multimedia website this semester.

Martin Šmok was making a documentary film in the summer of 1994 about the Jewish underground movement in Slovakia during World War II when he realized that the key witnesses he needed to interview all lived far away from his home in the Czech Republic. While looking for help, he came across the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation, then just beginning its quest to interview 50,000 Holocaust survivors and witnesses around the world. Šmok was hired as an interviewer.

Pianist Alice Sommer reflects on the musical performances and Czech composers she knew in Terezín (also known as Theresienstadt camp-ghetto). Alice Sommer died February 23 2014 in England; she was 110 years old and the oldest known Holocaust survivor.
