The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme is organizing an online panel discussion “Ethics, Justice and the Holocaust”. The discussion will take place on 2 December 2021, marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December) and the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Doctors’ Trial (9 December 1946).

The online discussion will bring together experts to consider the issue of medical ethics during, and in response to, the Holocaust. Panelists will discuss educational initiatives that draw on the history of the Holocaust to develop ethical leadership in a contemporary context. Dr. Patricia Heberer Rice, Senior Historian, Division of the Senior Historian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will moderate the discussion.

Panelists include:

  • Herwig Czech, Professor of History of Medicine, Medical University of Vienna, Department of Ethics, Collections and History of Medicine
  • Stephen Smith, Finci-Viterbi Endowed Executive Director, USC Shoah Foundation
  • Stacy Gallin, Founder and Director of the Maimonides Institute for Medicine, Ethics and the Holocaust
  • Avi Omer, Founder, Social Excellence Forum
  • Hedy S. Wald, Clinical Professor of Family Medicine, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and daughter of a Holocaust survivor
