USC Shoah Foundation is pleased to welcome its postdoctoral research fellow, Dr. Justin Elliot, who will be in residence at the Institute for a couple of years. In addition to his residency at the Institute, Dr. Elliot is affiliated with USC Dornsife Department of History. Dr. Elliot will conduct research with two collections: testimonies of WWII political prisoners housed in USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive (VHA) and testimonies of the Cold War-era Albanian political prisoners collected by the Albanian Human Rights Project (AHRP) and housed in USC Digital Repository.

During his time at USC Shoah Foundation, Dr. Elliot will apply his knowledge of Albanian language and history to examine the AHRP testimonies and identify prominent themes and patterns in this under-researched collection with the goal of comparing it with the testimonies of WWII political prisoners housed in the VHA. Dr. Elliot is especially interested in integrating the AHRP testimonies in his research on Albanian political prisoners, memory and transitional justice. In addition, Dr. Elliot will use this residency to continue working on his research about Kosovo Albanian national identity, building on his doctoral thesis entitled “Albanian Language Management and the Generation of Kosovo Albanian National Identity Since 1945.”

Dr. Elliott earned his PhD in History from the University of College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies in 2017. He previously earned his MA in South East European Studies at University of College London School of Slavonic and East European Studies and his Bachelor of Social Sciences in International Studies and Spanish at the University of Birmingham.
