Modern methods of analyzing thousands of Holocaust survivor testimonies contained in collections such as the Visual History Archive present a challenge that is at once ethical and technological: how to listen to thousands of testimonies of Holocaust survivors as an integral body of voices and stories rather than a collection of fragmentary items in a database. In this talk, Hebrew University Researchers Renana Keydar and Eitan Wagner will examine the meeting point between testimony and computation, the new possibilities inherent in such an encounter, and the challenges and risks involved.

This lecture offers an examination of pro-state paramilitary violence in the Syrian conflict. It analyzes the emergence and transformation of pro-state paramilitarism in Syria in the context of the uprising and civil war. It focuses on the Syrian government’s deployment of the Shabbiha (later renamed ‘National Defense Forces’), irregular paramilitaries dressed in civilian gear and committing a broad spectrum of violence, including torture, kidnapping, assassination, sexual violence, and a string of massacres across the country.

In recent years, there has been a significant spike in antisemitism and hate-fueled violence and rhetoric against different groups on both a national and global scale. Surveys show that Holocaust education has an enormous positive impact on young people’s attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and actions. Despite the decisive outcomes from an understanding of this important history, Holocaust education is a requirement in only 15 U.S. states. The need for Holocaust education could not be greater now. Join this panel of experts to learn about the ongoing efforts to increase Holocaust education across the country.

A Conversation Between Professors Yehuda Bauer (Hebrew University, Emeritus) and Xu Xin (Nanjing University)Noted Holocaust scholar Professor Yehuda Bauer is Professor Emeritus of History and Holocaust Studies at the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Academic Advisor to Yad Vashem. Credited with widely expanding Holocaust education within Chinese academia, Professor Xu Xin is the Director of the Glazer Institute of Jewish Studies at Nanjing University, where he initiated the undergraduate and graduate Jewish Studies programs.

In this talk, Chad Gibbs will discuss how Jewish prisoners created what he terms “spaces of resistance” at Treblinka and how studying these locations can provide revelations about the roles of women prisoners in resistance.

On April 21, the Pasadena Armenian Coalition will host a community-wide event at the Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Monument to commemorate the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The event will pay tribute to the enduring strength and resiliency of the survivors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, while honoring the memory of the more than 1.5 Million victims who lost their lives 109 years ago. The event will feature survivor testimonies from the Visual History Archive, followed by the keynote speaker, Sedda Antekelian, USC Shoah Foundation Senior Learning and Development Specialist, as well as remarks from Congresswoman Judy Chu. Students from local Armenian schools will recite poems and songs to conclude the event.

Participants will become familiar with the various pathways of IWitness by navigating through the site with USC Shoah Foundation educators. Exploring Holocaust Remembrance throughout the International Community Moderated Discussion and Q&A with special guest Kathrin Meyer, PhD, Executive Secretary International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Friday, June 17, 2016 1:00pm – 2:00pm Leavey Library Auditorium (lower level)

This documentary chronicles the Holocaust as experienced in Italy, from the racial laws Mussolini enacted in 1938 through the German invasion in 1943 and the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945. The experiences are made personal through the use of testimony from the archive of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education. Nine Italian citizens, all survivors of Auschwitz, share their stories; their testimonies are woven among personal and historical photographs and additional archival footage.
