Richard Rozen remembers hiding with his family in an attic of a small cabin on a farm in Poland for over two years. At night when everyone was sleeping Richard’s father gave him writing and reading lessons. Richard’s testimony is featured in the book, Testimony – The Legacy of Schindler’s List and the USC Shoah Foundation.

The Holocaust has always been a topic close to my heart. Not only because I am Jewish and Israeli, but also because I’ve been learning about the Holocaust since my childhood. Last year, I felt the strongest connection to the Holocaust when I attended March of the Living, a two-week trip to Poland and Israel.

The Jews of German-occupied Budapest, Hungary were relocated to specially selected buildings throughout the city identified as Yellow Star houses. Each house was marked with a yellow Star of David on a black background. The decree for relocation was issued on June 16, 1944. Deák Ervin remembers when his family’s apartment was seized by a soldier and they were then forced to live in the soldier’s old apartment, designated as a Yellow Star House. Deák Ervin reflects on the horrible conditions of the apartment.

I look at the picture and realize this is why I’m working at the USC Shoah Foundation. This is what it’s all about. The photo shows two women standing in a field of green grass dotted with dandelions. The younger of the two has her arm wrapped around the other. The older woman smiles at the camera, while the other’s attention is focused only on her friend. The bond between them comes through; the love they share is unmistakable.

Twenty years ago, David Strick photographed Steven Spielberg surrounded by 12 Holocaust survivors – illustrating in a single frame the work and mission of the newly-founded Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation.On a cool day this January, Spielberg again posed for a photo by Strick; only this time, students from middle school to college stood around him. This is the Shoah Foundation today.

March 28, 2013: The Student Voices short film contest enables USC students to join the conversation about genocide and human rights by using the Visual History Archive to craft visual arguments around these topics. The top films were screened at a special event hosted by the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Following the screening, Stephen D. Smith, Executive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation, moderated a discussion with the judges, including Ari Sandel, who won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Short Film for West Bank Story.

Ruth Pearl is best known as the mother of late American journalist Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal’s South Asia Bureau Chief, who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan by terrorists in 2002. But it is her own life story that is preserved as part of USC Shoah Foundation’s new collection of testimonies from North Africa and the Middle East.
