As the first anniversary of my life-changing trip to Poland is upon me, I take time to reflect on the impact that trip has made on me both personally and professionally. I have learned so much from my experiences as a teacher in USC Shoah Foundation’s and Discovery Education’s Auschwitz: The Past is Present program.
Jeannie Woods
Jeannie Woods is a seventh and eighth grade language arts teacher at Fort Payne Middle School in Fort Payne, Alabama. Woods was one of the 25 educators who participated in the Auschwitz: The Past is Present professional development program in January 2015. She has also directed several plays, and in 2007, her students produced a video called Breaking the Silence about Dating Violence that is now used in schools across the country. She was recognized as the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence Citizen of the Year for 2007 for her work to raise awareness about abusive dating relationships

September 17, 2015As Hannah, in the novel The Devil's Arithmetic, needed to have a first-hand experience to fully understand the Holocaust; my students must be equipped with first-hand information, too. While they cannot "time travel" as Hannah does, they can hear from survivors to have a greater understanding of the Holocaust.
