Central European University Seminar – Testimonies and Teaching: New Sources and Methodologies for Jewish Studies

The Institute’s Visual History Archive (VHA) has been available at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, Hungary, since April 2009.  For the second year in a row, CEU is organizing a workshop (to be conducted in English) on the use of the VHA in research and teaching.

The Curriculum Resource Center (CRC) at the Central European University is hosting academics for one week, offering workshops on course design and teaching methodologies.  One such upcoming workshop, on the theme of “Testimonies and Teaching:  New Sources and Methodologies for Jewish Studies,” will explore ways in which the Visual History Archive can be useful in designing university courses.  Participants will be able to consult with CEU faculty in Jewish Studies and Gender Studies.  During the session they will also have the opportunity to use the Visual History Archive.  University instructors of history, sociology, anthropology and gender studies are encouraged to apply.

Call for proposals:

Jewish Studies and Gender Studies at CEU present Testimonies and Teaching:  New Sources and Methodologies for Jewish Studies, March 21-25, 2011.  Deadline for applications:  9 January 2011.  The workshop will be conducted in English.

The workshop will be structured around the extensive Visual History Archive of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute, which contains interviews with 52,000 survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust (www.library.ceu.hu/vha.html).  The CRC workshop will explore ways to build courses around this database.  Participants will be able to consult with the CEU faculty in Jewish Studies and Gender Studies, and experts from the USC Shoah Foundation Institute.  During the session they will also have the opportunity to use the Visual History Archive.  Teachers of all disciplines, including history, sociology, anthropology, and gender studies are encouraged to apply.

Note:  In addition to the application form ( CRC_applformNew.doc), applicants should submit an 800-word letter of intent on how they are planning to use the archive in their teaching.
