Living through the Holocaust was such a strange and overwhelming experience, survivors often found it difficult to find ways to describe it. In her lecture “Phantom Geographies in Representations of the Holocaust” hosted by USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Studies on March 22, Kathryn Brackney identified survivors who talked about living in a world outside of time and place, where even the laws of nature fell apart.

Sanna Stegmaier, a second-year joint PhD student in German Studies and Cultural Studies at King’s College, London and Humboldt University, Berlin, has been awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2018-2019 Center Graduate Research Fellowship competition at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. She will arrive at the Center for her two-week residency near the end of August and in addition to conducting research in the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive, she will consult with staff from the Dimensions in Testimony team.

Kimberly Cheng, a PhD candidate in the Joint PhD Program in Hebrew and Judaic Studies and History at New York University, has been awarded the 2018-2019 Breslauer, Rutman and Anderson Research Fellowship at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. Cheng is the second recipient of the Breslauer, Rutman and Anderson Research Fellowship, and will be in residence at the Center from September to October 2018 to conduct research for her dissertation, which examines central European Jewish refugee life in Shanghai from 1937 to 1951.

Dr. Anne-Berenike Rothstein, a researcher in the Department of Romance and Comparative Literature and an Academic Counselor at the University of Konstanz, Germany, will visit the USC Shoah Foundation this fall to conduct research on methods of transforming and mediating memory of the Holocaust. Dr. Rothstein will be in residence at the Institute for two weeks in September 2018 in order to further research on a project which re-conceptualizes a guided tour for a satellite camp of Dachau.

Lukas Meissel, a PhD candidate in Holocaust Studies at the University of Haifa, Israel, has been awarded the 2018-2019 Greenberg Research Fellowship at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. Bieke Van Camp, a PhD candidate in Contemporary History at University Paul-Valéry, Montpellier (France), has been awarded the 2018-2019 Robert J. Katz Research Fellowship at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. Van Camp will be in residence at the Center in April 2019 in order to conduct research in the Visual History Archive to contribute to her doctoral dissertation, “The Shoah as a Social Experience and the Deportees as Social Groups.
