In July 2012, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute convened the inaugural workshop of “Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century,” a professional development program for teachers in Europe centered on the educational use of Holocaust eyewitness testimony.

Teachers from all over Hungary gathered in Budapest this month for the six-day introductory seminar to the USC Shoah Foundation’s 2013 Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century program. But there was one educator among them who didn’t just travel across the country – he came from the other side of the world.

USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education and the Anti-Defamation League held a workshop in November where nearly 50 Southern California teachers learned to use Echoes and Reflections, a multimedia curriculum on the Holocaust.

Professional development program culminates in best practices workshop for teachers From August 1-3, the USC Shoah Foundation-The Institute for Visual History and Education held a best practices workshop for graduates of the Master Teacher Program, a professional development program for educators that centers on the classroom use of Holocaust- and genocide-eyewitness testimony.

The Haverford School and Main Line Reform Temple – Beth Elohim will host workshops for teachers and students to learn about IWitness, USC Shoah Foundation’s educational website that uses testimony to teach via engaging multimedia-learning activities.

The University of Michigan- Flint held its second annual Workshop on Teaching and Working with Survivor Testimonies this week, which included exploration of Rwandan and Holocaust survivor testimonies.

Scholars and educators in Michigan have a unique opportunity to spend five days studying and exploring the Visual History Archive, guided by USC Shoah Foundation staff, experts and genocide survivors themselves.

The Eugene and Eva Schlesinger Endowed Teacher Workshop on the Holocaust at California State University, Long Beach, July 13-17 will include instruction on both Echoes and Reflections and IWitness.

Teachers in Texas can register to attend Dallas Holocaust Museum’s Holocaust and Human Rights Educator Conference Aug. 3 and 4.

As part of the IWitness Detroit program, USC Shoah Foundation education staff hosted a half-day IWitness workshop for educators at the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD), Michigan, last Tuesday, April 19.

Rob Hadley, USC Shoah Foundation education consultant in the U.S., will lead an introductory IWitness workshop at the one-day seminar “Teaching and Learning About the Holocaust” Saturday, June 4, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
