International Liaison Network

As a global organization, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute relies upon an international network of consultants to whom we refer as our liaisons. They constitute a cadre of highly committed individuals whose skills and experiences play a critical role in supporting the work of the Institute worldwide. They are the critical link in helping the Institute identify potential partners in their home countries and regions and ensure that the Institute's international activities run efficiently and effectively. Funding for the International Liaison Network will ensure the continued success of the liaisons in their respective countries. Support this program .

Graduate Fellow Program


Scholarship shapes all good education. Scholars and their work inform the public discourse, and over time, influence how society understands its collective past. The USC Shoah Foundation Institute Archive, unique in its geographic scope and content, offers unprecedented opportunities to deepen knowledge not only about history of the Holocaust, but in a variety of disciplines including oral history, history, political science, sociology, religion, anthropology, philosophy, literature, and psychology. Funding for the Graduate Fellow Program will allow the Institute to award fellowships to students whose research supports the mission of the Institute. Support this program .

Education Research and Development Fund

Raising the degree to which society understands the detrimental effects of intolerance, bigotry, prejudice, and hatred is the core objective of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s educational materials. In order to ensure that our educational and training program is relevant and effective in helping educators engage students in the United States and across the world, we need to conduct ongoing assessments of our educational materials to understand programmatic impact and to gain invaluable information as a means to guide and shape future educational work. Funding for the Education Research and Development Fund will provide the Institute with critical resources to assess existing educational materials and to further develop high quality educational materials. Education Training Fund

Providing educators with training to use relevant and meaningful educational materials aligned with state curriculum standards to help deepen students’ critical thinking, decision-making and understanding of issues of intolerance is critical to the Institute’s mission. The Institute trains educators across the United States on how to incorporate its visual history testimonies and online resources into classroom lessons. The training sessions are conducted in collaboration with other educational institutions and with regional public libraries. Funding for the Education Training Fund will enable the Institute to continue to conduct trainings for educators in the United States. Support this program .

Echoes and Reflections Evaluation

Teaching about the Holocaust goes beyond understanding historical facts, figures, and dates. Echoes and Reflections is a multimedia curriculum on the Holocaust that was developed in 2005 in collaboration with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the USC Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education, and Yad Vashem, The Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Authority. Since its launch, the partners have conducted over 90 regional and national teacher training programs for more than 3,000 educators representing 975 schools. Funding Echoes and Reflections Evaluation will help the partners conduct ongoing evaluations to understand and begin to quantify beyond anecdotal evidence the impact of the curriculum on teachers’ and students’ behaviors and attitudes regarding tolerance and difference. Programs and Education Fund

To further the Institute’s urgent mission to overcome prejudice, intolerance, and bigotry—and the suffering they cause—through the educational use of the Institute’s visual history testimonies, ongoing support is needed to sustain and expand our educational programs. Funding for the Programs and Education Fund will provide the Institute with critical resources so needed to further plan and implement innovative projects and programs which will have a lasting and profound effect on children in the United States and around the world. Newsletter- PastForward

PastForward, the official publication of the USC Shoah Foundation Institute, is sent out biannually to over 60,000 individuals, universities and colleges, museums, nonprofit organizations, non government organizations, and other interested organizations. PastForward is one of the major tools through which we update our constituencies on our work both in the United States and worldwide. Funding of PastForward will allow the Institute to continue to publish and distribute this valuable publication. Support this program .

Central and Eastern European Fund

The USC Shoah Foundation Institute conducts international work with the valuable support and guidance of a dedicated network of liaisons, many of whom have worked with the Institute since its inception. In Central and Eastern Europe, the Institute is currently represented by individuals in Hungary, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. Support of the Central and Eastern European Fund will allow the Institute to expand programs in those countries where we have representatives, as well as other countries in the region. Such programs include the International Visual History on Loan Program and the International Visual History Program, which provides educators with the knowledge to integrate testimonies into their classroom lessons and activities. New Visual History Collections

Violence and racism are the twin scourges of modern time. The USC Shoah Foundation Institute's commitment is to combat them wherever we can, no matter who the victims are. To this end, the Institute plans to work collaboratively with others around the world to record and disseminate the memories of other people who have been the target of history's most vile impulses. We have already begun conversations with friends and colleagues in South Africa, Rwanda, and Cambodia. With funding from donors, we can continue working collaboratively with other organizations to collect these testimonies and expand our reach to include Darfur. Support this program .

E-newsletter

In order to communicate with people in a timely manner, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute distributes an electronic e-newsletter each month at no cost. The purpose of the e-newsletter is to provide the Institute's donors, supporters, friends, educators, students, scholars, and other interested people with current updates on activities, programs, and issues that are being addressed. The distribution of the e-newsletter allows the Institute to communicate with thousands of people worldwide with relative ease. Funding for the e-newsletter will enable the Institute to continue and expand the use of the e-newsletter as an effective means of communication to more people worldwide. Support this program .

Visiting Scholars Program

Visual history testimonies serve as a valuable resource through which scholars may deepen their understanding of historical events. The Visiting Scholars Fund will sponsor visits for scholars and educators in the United States and abroad whose research supports the mission of the Institute. Support this program .

Digital Access Fund

Currently, 12 universities and institutions worldwide are able to access online the entire visual history archive. Hundreds of thousands of students, educators, professors, and scholars now have access to the nearly 52,000 testimonies of Holocaust survivors and other witnesses. Support of the Digital Access Fund will make it possible to provide the support for more than 200 universities, research institutions, museums, and other facilities in the United States and around the world to access the entire USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s testimony archive electronically through Internet2. Online Resource Fund

As more and more students and educators are turning to the Internet for educational resources, the Institute is creating multimedia exhibits on its website to meet the need for interactive and innovative educational tools. Support of the Online Resource Fund will help support the development of new online resources for educators, students, scholars, and the general public. Support this program .

Latin American Education Fund

Survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust in 12 Latin American countries came forward to share their firsthand experiences with the USC Shoah Foundation Institute so that their testimonies would be used to educate others about what can happen when prejudice and hatred go unchecked. The Latin America Education Fund will help support Spanish-language and Portuguese-language tolerance education in these countries and provide access, products, and programs to educators, students, and researchers. The Institute also plans to use Spanish-language materials for tolerance education programs in the United States. Support this program .

European Education Fund

The USC Shoah Foundation Institute recorded more than 20,000 testimonies in Europe, in many of the cities and towns that were directly affected by the events of the Holocaust. The European Education Fund will enable the Institute to provide access to the testimonies directly to educators, students, and researchers in this region, where educational materials that address issues of intolerance and racism are greatly needed. Naming Collections on the VHA

With nearly 52,000 testimonies in 32 languages and from 56 countries, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s Visual History Archive contains the world’s largest collection of testimonies of survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust. These testimonies are at the core of each educational product developed by the Institute. Naming collections on the Visual History Archive will allow donors the opportunity to identify a subset of testimonies contained in the archive and establish a collection in honor or memory of any individual, family member, or loved one.
