Teaching, Testimony, and Transformation International Symposium

The USC Shoah Foundation Institute organized a symposium for educators and leaders of partner organizations in Rwanda and South Africa on July 25 and 26.  The symposium, titled Teaching, Testimony, and Transformation:  Global Landscapes, centered on the educational use of Holocaust and genocide survivor testimony in the classroom setting.  Participants worked towards a shared understanding of opportunities and challenges that educators face in different countries and the factors that contribute to convergences and divergences in education across national borders.&nbs

In July 2012, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute convened the inaugural workshop of “Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century,” a professional development program for teachers in Europe centered on the educational use of Holocaust eyewitness testimony.

The inaugural workshop of the Institute's Teaching with Testimony for the 21st Century program ran from July 1-6 at Central European University in Budapest.  The program for teachers in Europe provides professional development training centered on the educational use of Holocaust eyewitness testimony.  Twenty teachers from across Hungary (and three from Hungarian-speaking regions beyond the national border) completed the workshop, which prepared them to produce their own testimony-based classroom lessons and activities.

Nearly 52,000 video interviews archived digitally

LOS ANGELES—June 28, 2012—The USC Shoah Foundation Institute has completed a multiyear, multimillion-dollar project to digitally preserve the video interviews in its Visual History Archive. The archive contains testimony from nearly 52,000 Holocaust survivors and other witnesses.

Concours national de la Résistance et de la déportation 2012 : “Résister dans les camps nazis”

La 51ème édition du Concours national de la Résistance et de la Déportation avait retenu pour l’année scolaire 2011-2012 le thème suivant : “Résister dans les camps nazis”. Un groupe de huit élèves de 3ème du collège de Colombes (Hauts-de-Seine) a choisi de traiter ce thème à travers un projet audiovisuel portant sur la révolte des Sonderkommandos d’Auschwitz-Birkenau le 7 octobre 1944. Ce travail s’est appuyé sur les récits de onze témoins des événements, récits issus de la collection de témoignages du Shoah Foundation Institute.

IWitness honored by American Association of School Librarians

On June 23, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) named IWitness, the Institute’s new online resource for teachers and students, one of the “top 25 Internet sites for enhancing learning and curriculum development” for school librarians and teachers.
