Raphaël Burgel est né le 1er décembre 1914 à Tours. Sa famille s’installe à Paris où elle demeure jusqu’en 1927, avant de déménager à Villennes (Seine-et-Oise). Ouvrier métallurgiste, il rejoint la zone non occupée en janvier 1941. Il est arrêté par la police allemande alors qu’il tente de quitter la France pour l’Espagne. Il parvient toutefois à dissimuler ses origines juives et il est déporté en tant que résistant à Buchenwald, en juin 1943. Après un rapide transit par le camp de Maidanek, il est transféré à Auschwitz où il travaille dans une scierie.

Dans cet extrait, Adolphe Kornman raconte comment il a passé la frontière franco-suisse en mai 1944 accompagné d’autres enfants. Il se souvient de l’accueil chaleureux des premiers habitants suisses rencontrés derrière la frontière.

Régine Jacubert est née le 24 janvier 1920 à Zagorow (Pologne). La famille part pour la France en 1930 et s’installe à Nancy. Réfugiée à Bordeaux avec les siens en 1940, elle rentre seule à Nancy où elle travaille. Le reste de sa famille est arrêté et interné. A Nancy, elle échappe à la grande rafle du 19 juillet 1942 et passe clandestinement en zone Sud. A Lyon, où elle a trouvé un travail, elle entre dans le mouvement de résistance Combat, en janvier 1943. Arrêtée en juin 1944, elle est interrogée à la Gestapo, notamment par Klaus Barbie.
