Holocaust Survivor Stories Inspire Young Artists
Students across the Czech Republic, Hungary, and some regions of Romania, recently participated in a series of contests to create cartoons and drawings inspired by testimony in the Visual History Archive. Originally conceived and organized by Petra Hoffmannova and Jakub Mlynář of the Malach Center for Visual History in Prague, the challenge was replicated and inspired more than 120 grammar school, high school, and applied graphics students to submit illustrations based on the experiences of Holocaust survivors.
By providing a way for teachers to combine history with art education, the challenges demonstrate how testimony can be used to form intersections among different subject areas and engage students in participatory, project-oriented learning.
