What can the Institute’s Visual History Archive teach us about other mediations of the Holocaust: how survivors tell their stories, how life performance and other media shape their narratives, or even how humor figures into remembrance?

Over the last six weeks, I have had the unique opportunity to be the Senior Fellow at USC Shoah Foundation - The Institute for Visual History and Education. It’s been an honor for me to be here, especially since I led the Institute between 2000 and 2008. Returning to this remarkable place, having the opportunity to use the Visual History Archive, and working among dear former colleagues and new friends has been simply thrilling.

My recent stay at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic career.  From the remarkable power and content of the Visual History Archive, to the welcoming and helpful nature of the staff and donor community, I leave my term as the Breslauer, Rutman, and Anderson Research Fellow strengthened by new friendships and enriched by new findings for my work. 

The USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research invites applications from senior scholars for its 2014-2015 Center Research Fellow. The fellowship provides $30,000 support and will be awarded to an outstanding candidate from any discipline who will advance genocide research through the use of the Visual History Archive (VHA) of the USC Shoah Foundation and other USC resources.

Five more IWalks are in development in Hungary as part of a new initiative led by teachers who have graduated from USC Shoah Foundation’s Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century professional development program.

USC Shoah Foundation Chief Technology Officer Sam Gustman will give a talk at the annual American Libraries Association conference this Saturday in Chicago.

In this presentation, Elyse Semerdjian will outline the earliest Armenian pilgrimages to the killing fields of Dayr al-Zur in the Syrian Desert. It is there that Armenians interacted with the remains of Armenians murdered during the Armenian Genocide (1915-1918) in acts of remembrance. Semerdjian will discuss the origins of the now-destroyed Armenian Genocide Memorial in Dayr al-Zur and the ritual and collection habits of pilgrims that enact what she calls bone memory.

As a result of partnership between the Shoah Foundation Institute at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and the Holocaust Memorial Center and the Education Research and Development Institute in Budapest, a Hungarian-language educational resource Sodródás és szembenállás - Sorsok a vészkorszakban (Drifting and Opposition-Human Fates in the Shoah) was developed by Peter Molnar, history teacher and high school assistant principal.

The USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research invites research proposals from advanced-standing Ph.D. candidates for its 2019-2020 research fellowships. Each fellowship provides $4,000 support and will be awarded to an outstanding advanced- standing Ph.D. candidate from any discipline for dissertation research focused on testimony from the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive and other USC resources.

Carli Snyder is the 2022-2023 USC Shoah Foundation Robert J. Katz Research Fellow in Genocide Studies. Since the beginning of January, she has been in Los Angeles conducting research with Visual History Archive (VHA) testimonies. A PhD candidate in History at the City University of New York Graduate Center, she is conducting research as part of her larger dissertation project that is provisionally entitled ‘Flesh of the Facts’: Toward a Feminist Holocaust Consciousness.

A longtime scholar affiliate of the USC Shoah Foundation has received a $50,000 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to transcribe and translate the Maya-Kaqchikel and Spanish-language testimonies of survivors of the Guatemalan genocide.

V posledních týdnech českou společnost rozdělily názory na vlnu uprchlíků mířících i přes naše území do Německa. Archiv vizuální historie USC Shoah Foundation nabízí možnost reflexe současného dění pomocí vzpomínek na historické události podobného rázu. Není to totiž poprvé, co se s uprchlíky setkáváme. Například v letech 1946–1947 přes naše území přešlo až 200 000 židovských běženců, kteří prchali z Polska před nenávistí, násilím a pogromy.

International March of the Living and Rutgers University Miller Center for Community Protection and Resilience will host “Let There be Light,” an internationally broadcast event commemorating Kristallnacht. The event, featuring testimony from USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive, honors the moral heroism and valor of those who resisted evil during the Holocaust and at other times of mortal peril to humanity.

Workshops highlight testimonies of local historical importanceMartin Šmok, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute’s Senior International Program Consultant, gave presentations at a training event for teachers organized by Pant o.s. The event took place at the Summer School of Modern History in Ostrava, Czech Republic on August 29 and 30.

It was not easy for the more than 52,000 Holocaust survivors and witnesses in our Visual History Archive to tell their stories. But they did it, because they understood the importance of preserving these painful memories for future generations. We are those future generations, and it is our turn to carry their stories and messages of strength and resilience forward.

Historie města sahá nejméně do 12. století. Po prvním dělení Polska roku 1772 bylo město anektováno k habsburskému Rakousku, k polské správě se vrátilo až po skončení první světové války. Mezitím se Osvětim stala průmyslovým centrem a důležitou železniční křižovatkou. V roce 1921 mělo město 4 950 židovských obyvatel. V předvečer druhé světové války žilo v Osvětimi 8000 židů, přes polovinu populace města. V říjnu 1939 bylo město připojeno k Velkoněmecké říši.

Through their testimonies on the Visual History Archive and The 1939 Society websites, Holocaust survivors and rescuers have inspired middle and high school students from across the nation and eight countries outside of the United States to become “Messengers of Memory,” the theme of this year’s Annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest sponsored by Chapman University and The 1939 Society.

Holocaust survivor Minna Aspler -- who spent time in the Warsaw Ghetto -- recalls the personality of Emanuel Ringelblum, who had been her history teacher. Ringelblum went on to lead a clandestine effort with other Warsaw Ghetto inhabitants to amass an archive that would eventually shine a light on the atrocities that occurred there. Aspler's testimony, recorded by McGill University in Montreal in 1995, is stored in USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive.

The 2014 cohort of Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century in Poland reunited to share the lessons they piloted in their classrooms over the past year, with impressive results.

USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research is seeking applicants for three fellowships until Friday, April 15 and Sunday, May 1.

Mehmet Polatel, PhD and 2018-2019 Postdoctoral Fellow in Armenian Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, has been awarded the 2019-2020 Center Junior Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. He will arrive at the Center in August and will spend one year in residence. As the inaugural Center Junior Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr. Polatel will conduct research in the Visual History Archive and will also teach a course on genocide in the USC Dornsife College of Arts, Letters and Sciences. 

The USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research invites research proposals from USC undergraduate students and USC graduate students for the 2021 Beth and Arthur Lev Student Research Fellowship.

USC Shoah Foundation and the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute Foundation (AGMI) in Yerevan have launched a new partnership to develop programming to extend the reach of their collections, research and education initiatives using testimony related to the 1915 Ottoman campaign that murdered 1.5 million Armenians.

Staff and faculty at USC Shoah Foundation gathered Wednesday to view this year’s project from the 2013 UCLA Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM)’s Research in Industrial Projects (RIPS) program.
