"Probing the Ethics of Holocaust Culture"

On April 21 through 23, the USC Shoah Foundation Institute participated in an international conference, "History Unlimited: Probing the Ethics of Holocaust Culture." The conference, which took place at UCLA, brought together leading scholars and historians to revisit the question of whether ethical or aesthetic limits should be placed on how the Holocaust is represented in fiction or nonfiction.

Stephen D. Smith, the Institute's Executive Director, was the respondent in a session on the digitization of the Visual History Archive and the ethical issues involved in disseminating testimony online. Dr. Dan Leshem, the Institute's Associate Director of Academic Affairs, moderated a panel on the Holocaust as a literary genre.

The conference was sponsored by the UCLA Center for Jewish Studies, the UC Humanitites Research Institute, and the “1939” Club, and was cosponsored by the UCLA Department of History.
