Twenty years since its founding, the USC Shoah Foundation maintains a vibrant presence in the Czech Republic to educate the next generation about genocide and tolerance through the use of its Holocaust survivor testimonies.

This September a new school year will begin in Ukraine and the first lesson students be taught is “Ukraine is united" and the lesson will be devoted to state integrity of Ukraine. A tough issue for the country engrossed into an ongoing military conflict and terrorist attacks.

All over Ukraine, testimony from the Visual History Archive is inspiring children to create remarkable artwork representing true scenes of discrimination during the Holocaust. With their artwork, each of these young Ukrainians is hoping to earn a place at an annual summer camp dedicated to building tolerance and awareness of their country’s diverse cultures.

USC Shoah Foundation’s work in Poland has come a long way since filming of founder Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List began in Krakow in 1993. Today, it is an important site for USC Shoah Foundation's testimony-based educational programs and resources.

Staff from USC Shoah Foundation will gather with education leaders, teachers and other experts to explore the best practices of using filmed witness testimony in education in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on June 5.

The conference’s first roundtable discussion will bring together four panelists from all over the world who will engage in a discussion about how digital archives can be used both to engage and inform the public and also aid scholars in their research.

Teachers learned how to use testimony in their classroom activities at the third Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century professional development program in Poland Nov. 9-14, 2014.

One year after learning how to incorporate testimony into their lesson plans, the 2013 Teaching with Testimony in the 21st Century graduates in Hungary returned for a follow-up session to share the lessons they have now piloted in their classrooms.

Survivors describe their memories of Auschwitz in the following selection of English-language clips from the Visual History Archive. A total of 11,780 testimonies in the Visual History Archive mention Auschwitz; these testimonies were conducted in 26 languages and 45 countries.

USC Shoah Foundation – The Institute for Visual History and Education invites proposals for its 2014 Teaching Fellows program that will provide summer support for faculty at the Institute’s Visual History Archive access sites to integrate the Institute’s testimonies into new or existing courses. The faculty stipend program provides financial support and staff assistance to faculty members who wish to use the Institute’s life-history testimonies in their courses.  There are no restrictions with respect to the disciplinary approach or methodology of the proposed courses. 

J. Michael Hagopian’s collection of 400 interviews of Armenian Genocide survivors and witnesses drew one step closer to being fully integrated into the Visual History Archive today. The Armenian Film Foundation officially handed over the digitized collection to USC Shoah Foundation, where the process of cataloguing and indexing will begin.

Douglas Greenberg is Senior Fellow at the USC Shoah Foundation and Distinguished Professor of History at Rutgers University. Previously he was the Executive Director of the USC Shoah Foundation, a Professor of History at the University of Southern California, Dean at Princeton University and President of the Chicago Historical Society.

As USC Shoah Foundation commemorates 20 years of collecting genocide survivor testimony, the “Early Mediations of the Holocaust” panel will delve into some of the first narratives ever shared about the Holocaust.

Over the last six weeks, I have had the unique opportunity to be the Senior Fellow at USC Shoah Foundation - The Institute for Visual History and Education. It’s been an honor for me to be here, especially since I led the Institute between 2000 and 2008. Returning to this remarkable place, having the opportunity to use the Visual History Archive, and working among dear former colleagues and new friends has been simply thrilling.

The footsteps of Holocaust survivors come to life in IWalks, USC Shoah Foundation’s interactive testimony-based educational program.

The USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research invites applications from senior scholars for its 2014-2015 Center Research Fellow. The fellowship provides $30,000 support and will be awarded to an outstanding candidate from any discipline who will advance genocide research through the use of the Visual History Archive (VHA) of the USC Shoah Foundation and other USC resources.

This downloadable video contains clips from testimonies of Jewish survivors of the Holocaust from the USC Shoah Foundation Visual History Archive who were born and grew up in the Polish city of Oświęcim, now infamous as the location of Auschwitz camp system created there by the occupying Nazi German administration.

With nearly 52,000 interviews from survivors of the Holocaust and other genocides, the archive of audio-visual testimony assembled and maintained by USC Shoah Foundation is so abundant it would take at least 12 years to watch it from beginning to end. And that’s assuming the footage would be rolling 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When I started my new job here at the Institute, I was struck by this statistic, which adequately conveys the scope of this incredible resource.
