Reflections For a More Tolerant World

Survivors' testimonies enhance Holocaust exhibit in Brazil

A public exhibit in São Paulo gave Brazilians an opportunity to explore Holocaust history through the memories of local survivors.

Shoá, reflexões por um mundo mais tolerante (Shoah, Reflections for a More Tolerant World) ran from May 27 through July 4 at the government-supported organization SESC - Pompéia.  Originally created in Uruguay, the exhibit was translated into Portuguese and its content was modified for Brazilian audiences.  In addition to providing information on Brazilian politics and history during World War II, the exhibit featured video segments from the testimonies of survivors who settled in Brazil after the war, and a wall displaying the names of all 575 survivors whom the Institute interviewed in Brazil.  Twenty-four docents, all trained by university professors, provided additional context and guidance for visitors to the exhibit.
