I found as a teacher that the most challenging task when teaching about the Holocaust and genocide, is how to do it not using material that shocks the students to the point that they do not want to look at the content, study the history or listen to present day issues due to the emotional shut down that can occur.

Sarah Griffitts is a social studies high school teacher at the Calgary Board of Education in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  She received a BA in History at Mount Royal College and an MA in History from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.  Her master’s thesis focused on the establishment of Chelmno and Sobibor through the path of the Einsatzgruppen. 

USC Shoah Foundation and The Latin American Network for Education on the Shoah (Red LAES) today launch an educational partnership dedicated to the study, teaching, and dissemination of Spanish-language Holocaust testimonies in Latin America. The new initiative, announced to coincide with Yom HaShoah, will undertake a range of innovative activities including the creation of a landing page on USC Shoah Foundation’s award-winning IWitness platform that will feature downloadable Spanish-language modules based on testimonies from the 56,000-strong Visual History Archive.

USC Shoah Foundation -- The Institute for Visual History and Education invites proposals for its 2014 Student Research Fellow program. Svetlana Ushakova currently works in the collections department at USC Shoah Foundation as a content specialist. She received her doctoral degree in Russian history at the Novosibirsk State University, Russia. She is the author and co-author of several publications on the history of Soviet ideological campaigns, social mobilization, and adaptation methods used by peasant families to survive Soviet deportation and exile.

Danielle Willard-Kyle, a PhD candidate in History at Rutgers University, has been awarded the 2018-2019 Center Graduate Research Fellowship at the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research. Willard-Kyle will be in residence at the Center from mid-March to mid-April 2019 to conduct research for a chapter of her doctoral dissertation, “Living in Liminal Spaces: Refugees in Italian Displaced Persons Camps, 1945-1951.”

Julie Fitzpatrick, a PhD candidate in History at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been awarded the 2023-2024 Breslauer, Rutman, and Anderson Research Fellowship at the USC Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Research. She will be in residence at the Center for a month from mid-October to mid-November 2023 to conduct research for her dissertation, which is currently entitled "‘Light the Candles and Lay the Table’: A Study on German-Jewish Women’s Relationship with Food During the Prewar, Wartime and Postwar Eras."
